Positioning according to Ries and Trout is not what you do to a product. Positioning is what you do the mind of the prospect. That is, you position the product in the mind of the prospect.
So… we can see many products, many shops, many services in this world, but not all the brands are success. The important point is how to position the brand, your shop, your company, your business, your food (if you are in restaurant business), your designs, etc to the people’s / target mind.
Well, don’t talk about market leader product positioning here. I think that’s clear already. We can see how diligent they are in advertised their positioning.
Now let see what we could do with our own positioning for ourselves. As we know marketing aspect is begin from ourselves. So I think positioning yourself in peoples mind also very helpful to make your job, your business become easier to be remembered among the others.
As an employee for example, if you are an administration staffs (in finance division, or computer administrator division, marketing division in the office), of course you can position yourself not only as a usual administration staffs. You can be more than that, such as ‘I’m the link of all the data’ means you set yourself that if you are not in that office, the office data can’t be done complete. Trust me the more serious you realize your position, you will get more respect from your co-worker, from your relation in the office, also from your boss! You even want to improve your ability to become more expert in data processing and really got promotion. So I think positioning is important aspect in marketing yourself, because it will raise your own image among your co-workers.
If you are a salesman/salesgirl (in company, or even you are self entrepreneur salesman), the positioning of yourself also important. So you are not only selling the good positioning product, but you also have your position itself. I’m also a sales person for my own business, and usually make contact to clients, looking and approaching some clients. As a sales person, I always emphasize myself not as a seller, but positioning myself as a ‘friend who will help’ them to solve their creativities and production problem. When your clients become your friends, and you become their friend, means they do not hesitate to trust you to help them, to make order from you, even to talk some other things which is not your business but you can help them also to solve their other problem. And this is will be more everlasting than you just focusing in your product.
So you must be know the differences of these words after you introduce yourself with your prospects :
A. “May I offer you some / printing services / insurance products / health products… bla bla bla (you are starting with the products specification)”
B. “What can I help in order to / raise your selling of the product / set up your child education financing / make your body fit.
What will you choose as a user ? I think the option is B. Yes, people usually response if you starting the conversation in two ways, so you can find what they want.
And psssttt… I hate credit card sales person… because they usually do one way communication, I really hate it. If you are a credit card sales person, please position yourself not as terrorist, but pleeeeaaaseeeee as a financial planner person.
If you have a small shop, ruin in small business like me, don’t worry to make positioning for your small but lovely company that you care. I always salute with the owner of retail shop, the owner of small restaurant, small café, small telecommunication café, fashion shop. They are worshiped what they have, although it’s just a small, but of course it can be very exclusive. Depend to the positioning to your tiny lovely shop. As long the positioning is right, the special target market that you want will be come to your place. So it’s not only the price and the specification of the goods/services will make the customer come to your place, but also you must win the customers comfort when they come to your place. Let say they not only pay for the products, but also they can see that your place is the second place to fulfill what their needs, so they become addict to come to your place.
Have fun in positioning yourself, and Re-positioning yourself if you want to change your wrong positioning right now.
